Marc-Andre Sexy Pants

You know the story. Where there is something small and cute that requires your attention and loving but due to unforeseen circumstances you can't take care of them? Well, this is such a story:

Marc-Andre was starting to get distressed. He figured something was going array when his owner was starting to pay less and less attention to him this last few weeks. They were looking at their books, having late night group sessions or ranting about something called 'finals'. And there seemed to be something more distressing, 'moving'.
Marc wanted to make things all better for his owner but theres only so much a fish can do.
There seemed to be some sort of countdown to this 'finals' and the ranting, general stressed out behavior of his owner was getting more and more intense.
*Bubble, bubble* "What is this 'final' or 'moving'?" Marc-Andre wondered. But all he could do was watch and hope things would get better.
That week seemed to be upon them. His owner would come back and would seem less stressed!
*Bubble, bubble* 'This is great!', he thought. "Perhaps this will be over soon."
One dark night, after what seemed to be the last day of these 'final'-type nonsense. But something was very wrong. This time he was taken off the table that he'd resided in the last couple months and was being taken somewhere.
"Not again!" he screamed, swimming back and forth frantically. "I hate this!! Hey!! Stop!!!! I don't want to be taken somewhere else!" Unfortunately all his owner couldn't hear a thing.
They seemed to be saying something about 'library'. Marc-Andre had heard of this before somewhere but couldn't figure out where. He was so distressed about being moved somewhere again to care. He just wanted to go back to his happy little spot on the table and for everything to be happy again like he first went home with his owner.
He knew that his owner loved him. He was feed every day and talked to, though the last couple weeks the talking was less and less. He had heard horror stories at the Shop before going home with his owner.
Suddenly, there was light. He was in a strange place - there were more people walking around, reading books or working at their computers. and Books! Wow! Many, many books!
"Is this what they have to read?! All of them?! What is this place?!"
Marc-Andre could see that he was being brought up more steps and then downthe massive rows of books. There was a smaller table in the middle of the rows. His owner set him down.
"Finally", he thought, bubbling. "I've had enough of this nonsense. Please can we go home now?"
But his owner didn't hear him. They seemed to be writing something down, leaving his fishy stuff and seemed to be saying words of 'goodbye'. Then his owner got up and left.
"Wait! Where are you going!? Come back!" But they didn't hear Marc-Andre.
Time ticked by and still his owner did not come back. He kept hoping someone would come by or take notice of him.Later, there was! This new person looked at him and picked him up gathering all that his owner had left. Back down the stairs he went and there were much bigger table to be one than that little one in the rows of books. But these people couldn't stay to comfort him either! They left him on the bigger table and turned off the lights!
The next morning there were more and more people around looking at him, reading the note. He knew they were tying to be friendly but wanted nothing to do with them. He just sunk to the bottom of his bowl.
But O! There is someone who had a ring to her voice that cheered him. Again he was picked up and moved to a different part of the building. It's only been a couple days, but Marc-Andre is starting to see things on the up and up.

So there is a new member of the Chester Fritz Library staff - his name is Marc-Andre Sexy Pants. He was left one day at the library and was adopted by the staff of the library. He's now in the cataloging department at one of the catalogers desks. There's talk that perhaps Marc-Andre should have a different name.

If that happens- since he's currently in the cataloging department, how about: Marc-Dewey? I think that has a nice ring to it. :)

Day 0ish

Well Thursday, the 13th, was the first day that I showed up at the library but I really didn't do anything other than talking about what kind of things I would do during my 150 hours. I talked with a number of the staff while I was there - they were soo excited that I was back. It felt so good to come back into the library!

Anywhoozers, I talked with Shelby about the types of cataloging projects she was going to give me. Then I talked a little bit to Sally about reference. I did have to talk to Karen in Administration to sign a form about doing work for the university that's unpaid.
Shelby told me that I would do things such as cataloging a manscript collection, videos and streaming audio files. Also I might be doing some authority work, and cataloging in Dewey and learn some more information about RDA. Yays! :)

It actually wasn't a whole day that I was there...I was actually only there for about a couple hours...
it was so good to step through the doors of the library- its like walking into an old haunt of yours that you loved to be but your life path lead somewhere else. :)

I have returned!

The spring semester has come and gone....and SUMMER has arrived!! Yays!

This summer semester is my last semester (already?!) at the University of Alabama's SLIS program. It's been an awesome experience so far! For this last semester I am only taking 6 credits - 3 credits for an internship and 3 credits for an online class (Traditional and Digital Storytelling).

For my internship I was able to get an internship set up with the library that inspired me to be a librarian.

It's been a interesting path for me -
starting out as a workstudy student working for miniumum wage at the Access Services desk, (aka Circulation) and working my way up to where I was trusted with opening/closing the library, helping with patron billings, and other tasks usually done by staff. Then moving on to working fulltime as a Cataloger until I found that I couldn't resist knowing more about librarianship. The people of the Chester Fritz Library were instrumental and my supporters/mentors to going for my MLIS. (A little sappy I know but the truth!)

Ok so - moving onto : Why do an internship with CFL (Chester Fritz Library) at UND?
Well, for one, I wanted to do it here because I've worked here and know the people.
And for another, I know they would give me the best nonpaid intern librarian who they already knew experience. :)
Lastly, well I just can't stay away from here....neither can Glim the gnome. (He missed Access Services...)

I knew that I was in the right place to do all of this when I walked in Thursday last week to talk to Shelby and Sally about what I would be doing for my 150 hours. (Shelby is the heads up Aquistions and Cataloging, and Sally heads up Reference.) Everyone was really happy to see me! I felt right at home again here. :)

What I get to do- well in a nutshell: advanced/original cataloging projects and reference.
Win!

Let the adventure begin!
